How To Check Your Flow Rate:
A) If you get your water from a private supply, you should check the flow rate at the well pressure tank. You should use whichever of your faucets you find will flow the fastest and with the highest pressure level.
A faucet may have been installed directly by the pressure tank, and if so you can use this. (Don't worry if there isn't one; you can just do the test by fully blasting both the hot and cold faucets in a bathtub. Be sure to keep the drain open so you don't flood the house.) Turn the faucet on to its maximum flow until the well pump starts to run.
Once the pump kicks on and is running smoothly, put a 5-gallon bucket under the flow and time how many seconds it takes to fill to the very top.
B) If your water comes from a public supply, you should check the flow rate at the fastest flowing faucet in the building, such as at a bathtub. You can perform this test the same way as the above one; turn on the hot and cold faucets to their highest flow and place a 5-gallon bucket under it, timing how long it takes to fill to the top. |
*be sure to let overnight tests
sit for at least 12 hours and
exceed no more than 18 hours. They should be at
room temperature and not
exposed to any other elements. |
